Arequipa - Colca - Arequipa

Day 1. Arequipa - Colca

Pickup from hotels (Only near Downtown Arequipa). 

We will stop in Pampas Cañahuas 3500 meter above sea level, located a “National Reserve of Salinas an Aguada Blanca”, where you will see some Vicuñas y Alpacas. Unlike the Alpacas, Vicuñas are wild animals, which running freely on the high plateaus, in this national park, our local guide will provide information about these shy Andean camels.

Then we continue our journey to the Colca Canyon, little further up we will stop again at the little restaurant of Viscachani, where you can enjoy a stunning scenery of the Andes and also drink a typical coca tea. Afterwards we will continue ascending a dirt road still we reach the highest point of our trip, “The Viewpoint of the Andes (4,800 m /15,748 Ft).

At the highest top, we will get off the bus some minutes to observe the landscape, having in the background the volcanoes Ubinas, Mismi, Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active) and Ampato. We will drive downhill to the main village of the Colca Canyon, the Village of Chivay 3600 meter above sea level. Arriving to the town, we will have lunch in one typical Andean restaurant, after lunch our clients will be transferred to your hostel in Chivay. By the afternoon we will go to swim and relax to the Hot Springs of the Colca Valley (35° C / 95º F), a nice pool outdoors surrounded by huge mountains. After sunset, we will return to our Chivay where we will enjoy a good diner in some restaurant in the town. Overnight at the hotel in Chivay.

Day 2. Colca - Arequipa

06:30 am We will be driving towards the “Cruz del Condor”, a natural Viewpoint, where you can see the flight of the Condors and we will have the best view of the Colca Valley, we drive along the edge of the Canyon, seeing on route ancient terraces still in use by the local farmers, who grow mainly varieties of corn and potatoes.

We will make some stops for take photographs, and our local guide will give us a good insight into the Colca Canyon history. Here you will stumble upon a great rock, where ancient architectures carved the terraces, testing (perhaps) which parts of the Canyon were suitable for cultivation.

Arequipa - Colca - Puno

Day 1. Arequipa 

A.m. Transfer from airport to Hotel 

City tour. We will visit the most attractive viewpoints of the city, called Carmen Alto” from this place we will appreciate the three volcanoes that surround the city of Arequipa, pre-Inca terraces and the traditional agriculture of “The White City”.

Then we moved to the district of Yanahuara to appreciate portals viewpoint, continuing our City Tour in Arequipa, we headed Incalpaca TXP; a prestigious company that produces clothes using alpaca and vicuna fur, after Sachaca Square, where you will see the whole City of Arequipa and the three volcanoes, Arequipa beautiful countryside, Goyeneche palace, was the residence of Goyeneche Bishop hired the famous architect Luca Poblete to outline the cathedral.

Finally, we will visit the Founder Mansion; a beautiful countryside, is one of the more important and traditional mansion of the region of virreynal construction from the XVIII Century.

Mundo Alpaca. 

(Optional visit, does not included) Santa Catalina’s Monastery; It is the most important and impressive monument religious construction of Perú. Characterized by its narrow streets, gardens and squares have Spanish names and remind the old neighbourhood of Granada and Sevilla.

Day 2. Arequipa - Pampa Cañahuas - Patapampa-Chivay

7.30 am to 8:15 am. Departure from Arequipa via Yura, we will skirt the Chachani volcano and we will make our first stop at Pampa Cañahuas from which we will observe part of the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca and the other side of the volcanoes of Arequipa. There we can appreciate especially the Vicuña, the South American camelid with the finest fiber in the textile market.

We will continue until arriving at Patahuasi, here it is recommended to take a mate from Coca or Chachacoma very good for altitude sickness since from here we will start to ascend visiting Vizcachani where we will be able to appreciate the llama and alpaca. Then Toccrapampa from where we will observe bofedales with high Andean birds. We will arrive at Patapamapa, highest point located at 4,910 meters above sea level to appreciate the whole of the Southern Volcanic Mountain Range as the Ampato where the "Ice Lady" Juanita was found; next to it we will see the Sabancaya and the Hualca Hualca.We will continue until arriving to Chivay 

Day 3. Chivay - Yanque - Viewpoint Cruz del Condor - Maca - Chivay - Lagunillas - Puno

6:00 am. Departure to the Mirador de la Cruz del Cóndor. On the way we will make our first stop in the town of Yanque to appreciate the dance of the Wititi.

Then we will arrive at the Cruz del Cóndor arriving approx. at 8:00 a.m. Recommended time to observe the majestic flight of the condors.

We will walk bordering the Canyon with the guide for a lapse of 40 minutes.

We will enjoy the landscape for another hour and then we will start our return to the Chivay Village, stopping in different towns where we will appreciate the colonial architecture.

We will arrive at the Antahuilque Viewpoint, where we will be able to appreciate the enchanted lagoons, so called because of the change of color during the day due to the presence of algae.

Then we will arrive to Chivay and we will have time for lunch. Then we will take our tourist bus to Puno, making stops in Patahuasi, where we will have time to drink a hot drink, they are recommended to have a coca or muña mate.

Then we will visit Lagunillas, where we can appreciate birds and a beautiful view of the lagoon.

We will continue our trip to Puno, arriving approximately between 7.00 - 7.30 pm. in Plaza de Armas

Sillar Route from USD 66

The route of the sillar is a trip near the city to know the quarries.

It is the place where the white stone is extracted with which the emblematic buildings of Arequipa continue to be made.

The quarries create a unique landscape.

We will also enjoy the stories of the master stonemasons themselves.

Departure to the District of Cerro Colorado, transfer to Las Canteras de Añashuayco, where the combination of natural landscape and living culture offers the visitor a unique experience.

We will appreciate the huge cliffs of up to 30 m. of height carved "to combo and chisel", colonial facades or carvings, finding the workshops of interpretation of the carved of sillar directed by stonemasons.

At the visit you can hear the voice of the master stonemason, now known as "cutters", whose ages fluctuate between 21 and 80 years.

We will appreciate falls of bigger blocks and the wonderful experience of seeing small blocks of sillar made with ancestral instruments used from generation to generation.

Visit to the "Quarry of Culebrillas", a natural ravine formed by the erosion of water and wind, whose name is due to its geography that, in the form of narrow rows, show us the beauty of a "Virgin Quarry" that, when traversing it, causes sensations of majesty and mystery

There is a space formed by the crossroads in whose cliffs there are recordings of petroglyphs of different shapes, which is possible to have Wari influence.

Return to the city.

Trekking Arequipa-Colca

3 days -  2 nights

Day 1. Arequipa – Condor cross – San Juan de Chuccho

03:30 am, our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa and then start the shared guided tour to the second deepest canyon in the world: The Colca Canyon. Going up to 4200m, where is located the Natural Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca (vicugnas, lamas and alpagas). Arrival to Patapampa (4850m), a natural viewpoint that allows watching the Andean mountains range. At 6:00 am, we will arrive to Chivay town, located over 3600m, breakfast and departure to “Cruz del Condor” viewpoint for watching condors and the canyon. Then arrival to Cabanaconde and lunch. Then we will start the trek, walking around 4 hours until arrive to San Juan de Chuccho, where we will stay for one night in a family run bungalow. Dinner and overnight

Day 2. San Juan de Chuccho – Sangalle

07:00 am, breakfast at the local house in San Juan de Chuccho, and at 8:00 am after breakfast, we will start hiking for long ascent to our next village called Tapay (3000m). Along the way, we will visit Cosñirhua and Malata (2600m) its church of mixed racial ancestry, sights of the local landscape, very old terraces, snow-capped summits, varieties of flora and fauna.

At 01:00 pm, descend again to the Colca River and arrival to Sangalle valley – Oasis (2100m) where we`ll find a nice place to spend the night, accommodation in the bamboo bungalows, lunch and, relax at the pretty swimming pools between palm trees, surrounded by the Colca River, dinner and overnight in a family lodge.

Day 3. Oasis – Cabanaconde – Chivay – Arequipa

At 04:00 am, we will going up to Cabanaconde during 4 hours (3,280m). This day we walk up 1050m, for the last hard and steep trail of our Tour or Trekking in the Colca Canyon.

Arrival to Cabanaconde and breakfast at local restaurant of the Village. Departure by bus to Chivay, viewing many small towns all around the Colca Valley, located in the high part of this canyon. Visit to the hot springs La Calera.

Buffet Lunch in Chivay, and return to Arequipa, along the way, we will have a little stop, at the Natural Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca to see (Vicunas, Llamas and alpacas). Arrival to Patapampa (4850m), about 6:00 pm arrival to the city of Arequipa and transfer to your hotel

Trekking Arequipa - Colca 2 days - 1 night

Day 1. Arequipa – Condor cross – San Juan de Chuccho – Oasis

 03:00 am pick you up from your downtown hotel in Arequipa by our local guide to board to the bus, and head to Village of Chivay (3 hours approx. time of travel by bus), once in Chivay we have a stop for the breakfast at the local restaurant.

Then, we will continue with our journey to the Mirador Cruz del Condor” (this is the best place to see the stately flight of the Condors), where you will have free time to appreciate in all its dimension of the Colca Canyon and the flight of the Condors so close. We continue with trip to Cabanaconde where we start the trek.

10.00 am We arrive to the trailhead to start the trek in the canyon. The downhill trail offer great view of Colca valley, remote villages located in the left rim of the canyon, we descend for about 4 hours to the Colca River (2160m), a descent of 1300 meters and we will cross to the other side of the canyon and begin our ascent upward.

Around 01:30 pm, we arrive to the lodge and resting place in San Juan de Chuccho village (2300 meters above sea level). Where you will get a delicious and energetic lunch, after our lunch, we continue hiking for approximately four hours, crossing small villages (Malata and Cosñirhua), going up hills, over 2600m above sea level and down again to our next destination called Sangalle/Oasis. Where we`ll find a nice place to spend the night with bamboo bungalows, pretty swimming pools between palm trees, surrounded by the Colca River.

Day 2. Oasis – Cabanaconde – Chivay – Arequipa

This day you need to wake up so early (4.00 am), start the ascent of 4 hours to the left rim of Colca Canyon, to Cabanaconde (3280m). This day we walk up 1050m, for the last hard and steep trail of our trip.

At 8.00 am – 10:00 am, will be the breakfast and then travel by semi-private transport for 30 minutes to the Condor’s Cross lookout (2nd chance), Along the way we will visit many small towns all around the Colca Valley, located in the high part of the canyon. Optional visit to the Hot Springs Thermal swimming pools in Chivay (3600m).

12:00 pm we will have lunch in Chivay (lunch not included) and travel back 4 hours to Arequipa, along the way we will have a small stop to visit the (“Volcanoes Mirador” 4910 meter and the National Reserve). Natural habitat of South American camelids, vicuñas, llamas, alpacas and vizcachas. At 06:00 pm, approx. Arrival at the White City and transfer to their hotels and complete our trip.

Getting there

If you are in Lima, you can fly to Arequipa, with a travel of 1 hour and 30 minutes, or if you want to get to know Peru through its roads, you can go by bus, with an approximate journey of 14 hours.

From there to the Colca canyon, access is exclusively by land. Private cars or buses can do a time of 3 to 4 hours, with stops included so that the traveler can see the landscape.

Colca is one of the deepest canyons in the world, with more than 4160 meters deep.
